A Reduced Fat and Lower Calorie Avocado?

I can't remember who blogged about SlimCados about two or three weeks ago, but ever since I saw that post I really wanted to try one. Last week I finally found one at the local supermarket and of course I just had to try it.

They claim to be 50% lower fat and 35% lower calorie compared to the leading California avocados. I'll tell you right now, it's not worth it.

I'm not just saying that because I'm being picky. I mean, I eat Better'n Peanut Butter all the time and it's clearly not better than peanut butter. I think with the SlimCado it's just so bland and void of flavor and creaminess that it's just not worth it to me.

It's almost as if the green color in avocados is what holds all the flavor, because as you can see the SlimCados are more yellow. I could have done without them on my lean beef tacos with grilled red pepper, brown rice, and baked beans (yeah, I said baked beans!). Nick agreed.

In case you were wondering, SlimCados are still a great source of vitamin E, fiber, B-vitamins, potassium, zinc, and monounsaturated fat. It may be worth it to try one if you are really trying to watch your fat and calories, but for me, as with most things, I'd prefer to eat the real thing, just less of it.

And on another note, can you tell which tomato is home grown?

If you guessed the bright red one on the right, you would be correct. All that extra red pigment signifies more health-promoting lycopene. What's not to love?! After our bountiful tomato summer, I doubt I'll ever be able to eat another non-homegrown tomato again! Ok, maybe I'm lying.....

QUESTION: Have you ever tried a SlimCado??

In other news, I said YES to the DRESS on Saturday! I know I have an entire year before I get married, but I'm a planner so I thought I would start early. The lady at the dress shop said it would take six months to get in, so I'm pretty happy that I started so early! I can't wait to show everyone. And for all of you who have yet to get married, I have one tip; try on all dresses that you like, even if it's not something you ever imagined wearing. The dress I chose was one I would never have imagined choosing, in a million years.

  1. Thanks for the review gina! Yea, I would have imagined that the "slimcado" wouldn't taste as delish as the REAL thing! They never do! How were they made? I've never heard of them before this post!

Great advice about the dress fitting! I tried on so many styles that I never thought would look good....and they did!

  2. I'm with thehealthyapron, how are they made or cultured because this is the first time I have heard about a "slimcado".

  3. I haven't had a "slimcado" but I know Haas avocados (those jumbo-sized ones) are supposed to be lower in fat, and I definitely prefer the standard version to them. They too are bland. I don't really worry too much about fat with avocados because it's mainly good fats that they're filled with...although, it would be nice to guiltless eat a whole one!

  4. I've been meaning to try those, but sorta thought... what's the point? The fat in avocados is so healthy that I feel like I'm cutting out some of the benefit... even if I am trimming calories. Glad you saved me the expense of purchase.

    Congrats on the dress!

  5. Yay congrats on getting a dress! I haven't started looking yet. I'm just about a year away from my wedding (Sept 28th is the year mark!).

  6. I will be waiting patiently for my wedding invite! =)

Hmmm I think I would rather enjoy all the fat and calories and have the real thing...

  7. Oh MAN-- I tried a slimcado about a year ago, and I STILL shudder when I think about it-- so freakin' gross!!

Those things give avocados a baaaaad name!

  8. This is my first time hearing about the slimcado. I guess I'm glad that it still has its fiber and additional nutrients; however, if it doesn't taste good, is it really worth it? Healthy eating should be enjoyable, and I think incorporating a regular ole avocado fits that bill.

  9. I hate all these reduced fat mumbo jumbo things. Fat is okay and we need it, and an avocado isn't gonna kill us. Congrats on picking out your dress!

  10. Never tried it...but I'll stick to my full of healthy fat regular avocado - especially after your review!

  11. Very interesting. I have never heard of this slimcado. I'm not sure I want to try it. Sounds unappetizing. I also vote for eating the good stuff, just less of it!

  12. I cannot WAIT to see the dress! But it sounds like I'll be waiting awhile ;) Haha, I'm just kidding - it'll be worth the wait, I know it!

You know my thoughts on the SlimCados - bleck! Gimme the real deal!

  13. Thanks for the review, I have not seen those avocados anywhere but now I won't bother looking! Some things in nature just shouldn't be messed with.

Congrats on finding a dress. I had no idea it took 6 months to get the dress once its ordered.

  14. From my understanding (and I could be totally wrong), the Slim-cado is a legit variety of avocado, not some weird science/breeding experiment. Just like you have varieties of apples, mangoes, and potatoes, there are varieties of avocados - we just don't see all that variety in the marketplace. My guess is they are now marketing it for those who fear the fat/calories of the avocados we are used to? I've never seen them here, so I'm not sure how prevalent they are.

  15. It was me who blogged about the slimcadoes- sorry I convinced you to try something you didn't like... I actually kind of like them better, but I don't eat a lot of avocado either way, usually just spread some of it on my sandwiches. Guess it's just a personal thing :)

So excited about your dress! I can't wait to see pictures of you in it!

  16. congrats on finding your dress! and i have never ever heard of a slim cado. good to know i am not missing anything!

  17. Ack, that sounds really bad. Avocado itself has a very mild flavor (to me), so any less just sounds super unappetizing.

I hope you take pics of you in that dress! :-)

  18. I don't think I'd even try the slimcado...it sounds "messed with" and not natural. The fat and calories in a regular avocado make me like it more :)
I'm glad you tried it and noted that it's not worth it!

  19. The slimcado is just another variety of avocado which is grown in Florida - perfectly natural!

Unfortunately, that doesn't make them taste good! It tastes really watered down and doesn't have that creamy texture that I want when I crave avocado.

  20. i've never tried it..but c'mon, the fat's kind of what makes the avocado worth it. Not for the fat itself, but that's where all the flavor and texture is! Slimcado's good for those looking for a lower calorie alternative I guess, but as someone who embraces fat, I'll just stick with the full version. :)

  21. I can;t imagine someone creating a lower fat avocado. Wasn't the point of eating an avocado to get those good fats. I would assume the problem is portion control so instead of teaching that a product comes out to let them eat more for the same calories. Oh some "diet" foods I just don't understand. Never heard of this, and I am sure I will not see one since I am in Japan. Thanks for sharing because I may never have heard of this. Glad to hear you said yes to the dress. I am sure you will be a beautiful bride. It is true that you need to try everything on because things you don't think you will like may actually look good on you.

  22. I've never heard of the SlimCado. Is it just another type of avocado or is it an engineered fruit? I have spotted similar looking avocados in the grocery store and at the fruit carts on the street, but they are definitely not called "slim".

Congrats on finding a dress already! Finding the dress makes it seem so real.

  23. I've never even HEARD of a slimcado ... I'm definitely going to have to look these up. I'm guessing they must be avocados from a genetically engineered plant? I can't believe they have a similar nutrition profile, but I can believe they have a bland taste. That avocado is so pale! I suppose it could add some creaminess with fewer calories, especially for those who have trouble with portion control - but, I think I'd rather go with a little bit of the regular avocado! Also, I completely agree - homegrown tomatoes are definitely the way to go!

Congrats on saying YES to the dress, Gina! I'm so excited to see what it looks like!! Your advice to try on many dresses is perfect: the dress I ended up with was one I never thought I'd wear in a million years, but it was the one for me! :)

  24. I was appalled when I tried one of these a few years ago--it's an awful fruit and the calorie savings aren't even significant (and even if they were, the taste wouldn't make it worth the sacrifice). I did a rant about them on my own blog at the time: "SlimcaNO"

  25. Congrats on picking out a wedding dress! Can' wait to see it :-) Never heard of the slimcado, nor do I want to try one now. Why mess with a good thing??? Love your comparison of the 2 tomatoes. Glad I guess the right one!

  26. I hadn't heard of SlimCados, and I don't want to try them. What's an avocado without creaminess and flavor?

And, yes, homegrown tomatoes are the best!

    Congrats on picking a dress!!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Definitely hear you on homegrown tomatoes - just so much juicier and more "real" tasting.

    Congrats on your dress!

  28. whats the point in a less fatty cado! that's just silly haha but i'm glad you tried it. me? i want my cados DARK GREEN and FATTY FAT.

I just love them- they are a little sweet but still would keep enjoying them.
I did not even know about them until recently. They don't brown as quickly either.
