Tuna Confusion and a New House

Thanks for your comments on my last post, about mercury in fish. A couple of you brought up some great points:

Melinda mentioned that it's also important to know the signs of mercury toxicity. One of the most common signs, she said, is confusion. Thanks Melinda! That is great information. Don't get too paranoid though, some confusion is normal. You will know when someone is confused to the point that it's not normal.

A couple of you mentioned that light canned tuna is low in mercury too (actually it has the lowest amount of mercury of all canned tunas). The problem with light canned tuna is that it's also low in EPA/DHA (the essential fatty acids), which is why I didn't mention it.

Bottom Line:
Light canned tuna has the lowest amount of mercury out of all the canned tunas. Albacore also has a low amount (check out this website for more information), plus it has the added benefit of lots of EPA/DHA. The health benefits do outweigh the risks! If you are pregnant, however, I would stick to light canned tuna, and take a fish oil supplement that is high quality.

Picking a House...
The past couple of months have been filled with searching for a new house. Yes, it's true that Nick and I have yet to get married (or engaged for that matter) but we know we will eventually, and with the $8,000 stimulus ending in April, now is the time to buy! We have decided to choose "location" over "square-footage". What that means is that we will be moving to a very nice area, where you basically get much less house/land for the price. To us, it's worth it. We love the area, and the school system is fantastic (we're really looking to the future!).

Which do you like better? This one.....

Or this one?
I won't tell you which one I like better, but I want your honest opinion! I think we already know which one we are going to end up with, unless of course the inspection doesn't go as planned. Even if I don't get the house I really wanted, both of these houses will be fantastic for our first home. I'm so excited!

Coming Up
Tomorrow I will be doing a random post about a couple of TV shows that focus on nutrition. No, not the Biggest Loser, I'm officially over that that show.
Have a great day everyone, and thanks for reading!

  1. Ooh, can't wait to hear about which house you guys end up at! I like the second one a little bit better, but they are both adorable! Good luck!

  2. I love the 2nd one! I love stone in homes and it seems to have more character. :)

  3. I have not tried that Kashi meal, but the new that I have tried have been good. They are large portions and filling. Personally, just from the looks I like the second house - of course seeing the inside I may change my opinion :)

  4. Both homes are great! Congrats on this step. It's huge and as they say, you are now owned by a home! You'll never believe the work that comes with it!
Mike and I bought a house before getting married and we didn't spontaneously combust either! Schools were a huge factor as well!

  5. I LOVE the 2nd home. I'm partial to brick homes though. Plus, there is that gorgeous tree in the front.

  6. Is that stone covering the 2nd house? If so, def gets my vote.
Kashi meals helped me realize how bad gluten can be on my system. I remember eating 1 with barley as the main ingredient and the pain was awful

  7. I'd have to go with the second one. It looks so homey from the outside! And kids in the future, eh? Exciting ;)

  8. House number 2!!!! they're both cute, but I like the second one :)

  9. Gina How exciting!!! I am so excited for you and Nick!!! This is so great for you both!!! I agree about looking into the future when you are buying a house, very smart!!! My friends are searching for a house too right now because of the 8,000 dollar credit, I wish Mike and I could do that as well but we dont know if we are settling here in Virginia, we are looking to get back to chicago in the next year or so : )

I love the second house better, I LOVE brick houses, always have, my dream is to have a brick house one day as well, and I love the long pathway sidewalk too : ) beautiful!

Love ya girl and have a great day!! xoxo

  10. I prefer the look of the second house, although its hard to tell by just the outside!! Good luck with the house hunt, we've embarked and ended two house hunts since we've been here, which has ended being a good idea since we are moving away soon.

  11. Pretty sure I'm de-lurking here but I like the 2nd house. It's so cute and I love the stone work!

  12. They are BOTH cute but I love the 2nd one more! :)

  13. I love the second one, has a little more character and does not look like the "other houses" on the block. It has a great curved walkway you could plant roses next to, looks a little like Hansel and Grettel house. The big question is which has the best kitchen?.....but you can always remodel that.

    Good Luck!

  14. This is a dumb reason but I like the second one. It has a huge tree! Growing up we had really small twig-like trees (it was a brand new neighborhood)and I always wanted a house with a lot of big trees so I could climb them and hang a tire swing.

  15. oh my gosh! They're both ADORABLE! Just from the outside, I'd go with number 2 just because I like the brick but they're both great choices!

  16. Confession time: Once I saw the houses, I couldn't even think about nutrition. I get excited for other people buying their first homes! I love the 2nd one from what I could see. Great curb appeal. When we bought our first home (I was 25) we also took quality of location over size. I never regretted the decision. Good luck!

  17. Love the statement "some confusion is normal". I better hope so! =)

I really like the second house, however I guess you can't always tell by the outside. I think that we would also choose location over size. Besides if we lived way out in Jersey or somewhere worse, I know we'd be miserable.

  18. I like house 2 better...

Thanks for the update on the tuna - I have about 10 cans of chunk light in my pantry and didn't realize they weren't as high in fatty acids...I know for when that stash runs out.

Good luck with the final decision!

  19. Oh I love house number 2! it is so pretty!

I am over BL this season too, I actually deleted it from my dvr without even watching it...it is boring me.

I am not a curry fan, so I don't think I would like that frozen meal.

    Good luck with the casa!!!!!

  20. I like the 2nd one better, but they're both really cute!
And thanks for the tuna info...I eat tuna a lot and I never knew the difference between the different kinds. Now I know what to look for!

  21. 2nd one definitely! stone always has more character to it and gives a more "home" feeling.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I like the 2nd home because it has a "cottage feel" to it and looks cozy and quaint :-).
And bummer about the Kashi meal - I'm usually a fan of their products, but I must say I haven't tried many of their frozen dinners.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I love the second home! Looks so cute, love the stone!

    ReplyDelete
  24. well let me say that I love BOTH houses but I think number 2 stole my heart...it looks a little more 'homey' if you know what I mean, but whatever one you choose will be your one and only home :) great review on the kashi dinner!

  25. I like the look of #2 best from the outside. But # 1 might be perfect inside...

I hear you on the issue of getting little house for your money. We are searching in the Greater Boston area...I don't think properties get more over priced, except in San Fransisco and perhaps Seattle. Very overpriced. So we are looking for cute and cozy, in communities with good schools and recreational opportunities.

    Good luck!

  26. Thanks for the additional tuna info!

Both houses are great. I think I like the second one a bit better. What an exciting time for you... :)

  27. NUMBER TWO IS GORRRRRRRRGEOUS!!!!! i'm coming over when you buy it! and you can make us non mercuried and non kashi frozen mealed dinners :)

glad you're planning your future with nicky! he's so lucky to have you so he best do the legit things to lock you down ;)

  28. Just by exterior appearance, I like the 2nd...great landscaping and a beautiful big tree in front. i also like the stone siding and big windows:) Can't wait to see which one you pick!

  29. I used to eat (light) tuna almost daily. I knew it probably wasn't the smartest but I was on a serious kick for a while there. Then finally, my mom got concerned and told me I have to slow down. So now I try to limit to once a week, great, informative post yesterday about tuna though.
Both houses are very cute and you can only tell so much from the outside.. but I think I like the first one better, looks a little newer.

  30. I like the second house! And I agree location over square footage-very smart :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. I totally like the second one better and it is because of the front porch area. I love being able to enjoy sitting outside, but if the other one has a nice backyard that is good too. Both look nice, but the second just seems cuter.

Thanks for the shout out. Yes, you will know when someone is going crazy in the for real sense. Like they are disoriented and stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  32. My guess is that you like #2...everyone else seems to like it and it must be that curb appeal. They both look nice, but I'd want to live in #2. :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. NUMBER 2!!!! My hubby and I went house hunting this weekend too!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Gina! This is so exciting! I can't wait to hear more on the house. I prefer #2 personally, but I love that style! Yay, congrats to you and Nick!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I've got a thing for the second one- it looks so quaint!

That's exciting that you guys are getting a house! Location was definitely the priority over square footage for me, too.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I really like # 2. I am sucker for stone fronts.

My husband and I bought a house together before we were married. It was a natural thing for us to do. Worked out for us :)

  37. House number 2 is gorgeous! I love, love, love the exterior.

Too bad that Kashi dinner was a bomb. Red Curry Chicken SOUNDS delicious.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think the 2nd house is SO CUTE!!! I love the adorable little look of it!

Kashi is usually pretty good, it's too bad that you got a dud. (Or really, that Nick did!)

  40. I like the second house...it's charming with a lot of curb appeal! How exciting for you, Gina!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I like the second one much more because it looks like much more like a home! Perfect for a family!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I think both homes look great, and it's hard to tell from just the outside- maybe I like number 1 better, but again- so many parts go into a house besides the look from the outside. They both look like awesome first homes!

PS. Eric and I bought a house before we were engaged...although I think we were engaged before we closed on it haha, but oh well! Now is definitely the time to buy, you are right about that!

  43. Congrats on becoming home owners!! Both those houses are so cute! The second one has a quaint cottage feel to it, so im going to vote for the second one.

Thanks for the great info on the fish in mercury! i've always been leary of eating tuna because of it, but now i think i 'll make myself one of your tuna melts!

  45. Both of the houses are SO gorgeous!! I'm soooo excited for y'all!!! I confess I'm leaning towards the second house just a bit - I love the stone... :-) I can't wait to hear more about the house that becomes officially yours!! :-)

  46. Both houses are beautiful! That is so exciting. I love the look of #2 with the stone..so neat.

    Have a great day Gina!

  47. I'm going with house #1. Both are lovely though!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Both houses are really cute! If you like the newer look, than I'd go with house number 1. Thanks for the tuna info! I had no idea that the light tuna had lower levels of Omegas. I guess that makes sense but I just never thought of it. That's all I was buying too!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I vote for number two... it's super cute. However, it's hard to make a final pick if the interior in number one is better. In any case, good luck! I live in Columbus, but bought my first condo in DC. If only the real estate prices were similar!

    ReplyDelete
  50. From the outside, I think the second house looks super cute!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Its very hard to say which.. but looking at the outside.. I am going with number 2.

    ReplyDelete
  52. the look of house #2 is cuter I think - but house #1 is nice too - and if #1 is more functional for you with more things you really need & want vs. the outside look- I would go with #1 too! Congrats!
