Truvia and Red Hot

Today's post is all about my favorite combination; Truvia + Frank's Red Hot, mixed together into a beautiful sauce. It's amazing.

Ok, I'm full of it. But really, these are two products I couldn't live without. We'll start with Frank's Red Hot. Isn't it....gorgeous?!

And look, only a mere 190 mg sodium per tiny teaspoon. I suppose when I tell people I "never add salt to my food", I'm lying.

Red Hot was featured on the Food Network show Unwrapped not too long ago. The man who was interviewed actually took a drink from the bottle, just to show the viewers how much he loves Red Hot. Nick and I were both speechless. While we do love Red Hot, we're not so sure we could ever drink it straight out of the bottle, but the man proved his point...it's good stuff! Just like this lady here, we put this sh*t on everything!

Nick and I add a little Red Hot to many of our favorite dishes;

Eggs

Pizza

Stir-fry

Pasta

Oatmeal

Ok, not oatmeal. That's gross. But I'm open to trying anything :)

I was so happy to see a bottle of Red Hot right in the middle of this wonderful spread of food (below) on Easter Sunday. I mean, how can you have an egg casserole without Red Hot?!

And the cayenne pepper, which is the "key ingredient", may help speed up your metabolism, so what's not to love? Buy some. Use it. Love it. Enough said.

Next we have Truvia . I was once a Splenda girl, then I was a Purevia girl, but now I'm 100% hooked on Truvia. It's not that I don't like the others, but my taste buds really think Truvia tastes the most like....well....SUGAR! And isn't that the point?

Want to learn more about Truvia? Go ahead and read their FAQ page. I've heard a few people say that Truvia isn't really "natural", but you know what? That doesn't bother me. It's more "natural" than many of the other common sweeteners, and to me it tastes a million times better. If it's not truly 100% natural, oh well! In my opinion it's the better of two evils; the other being real sugar. And like I've said before, even foods or sweeteners that are 100% natural have been shown to have negative side-effects. Read my previous post about sweeteners to learn more about the research on some well-known sweeteners.

I love using Truvia in my oatmeal, my smoothies....

...and mixed into some Greek yogurt + unsweetened cocoa. Yum. Sometimes I also add a scoop of almond or walnut butter. Double yum.

QUESTION: What are two condiments and/or sweeteners you can't live without??

  1. I, too, LOVE hot sauce! Mmmmm.... Makes almost anything taste better! Especially because my husband HATES spicy things, so I can't add any spice to a recipe itself!

I'm currently groovin' on Stevia... I'll have to give Truvia a try! My guilty indulgence is Sweet & Low... my mom used it religiously, and I sort of developed a taste for it... :O

  2. I am so with you on hot sauce. I'm partial to Cholula and Crystal but I will try Red Hot for sure. I also love fresh mint and may add it to more things than hot sauce (well it's close). Mustards, great vinegars. Condiments make life better. Loved this post.

  3. Haha, at first I thought you were serious about the sauce, and I was like, say what? I don't use Truvia, but I love Frank's Red Hot! I keep a bunch of different kinds of hot sauce around because they all are so different. I also really like cholula and sriracha.

  4. I love hot sauce too, but I've never had Red Hot before. My bottles usually change, and I like to bring hot sauce back from the places I travel too. I am very partial to ketchup on scrambled eggs, and I love eating Indian food with chutney and this fabulous hot green cilantro sauce. LOVE that stuff, and it tastes great on scrambled eggs too!

  5. Being from Louisiana, I'm a tabasco gal myself...but I might have to try Franks!

  6. I love hot sauces and have a little collection. I've never tried Franks, but it for sure is going on my list! You are so right, you can't eat eggs without hot sauce! :)

I just bought my first packages of stevia the other day and have used a few mixed in things, and I liked the taste. I try not to use a lot of sugar or sweetners, but sometimes a little sweetness is nice... Once I'm done with my stevia packages I may give truvia a try, but I think the 100 stevia packages I have will last me a long time...

  9. I like to put cayenne pepper or pepper flakes on a lot of things. I prefer it to hot sauces like red hot and tabasco because it just adds spice without the vinegar-y taste

  10. I love Frank's red hot. JUST yesterday, I bought two new varieties that are available "chili and lime" and "thick". Can't wait to try them!!! Have a great day!

  11. 2 condiments I cannot live w/o are definitely mustard and pure maple syrup! I love my Sriracha, but I can cover sandwiches + make vegetable glazes w/ stone ground or honey mustard any day of the week! Maple syrup is so good on vegetables + in salad dressings as well!

    Just kidding ;)

  13. I agree that natural doesn't mean it's good. I haven't tried truvia, but I love nunaturals. for me, it tastes better than many sweeteners. I think if I have to say one thing I can't live without it would be nunaturals. :)

  14. ok, so i love sweet baby ray's bbq sauce, and it definitely is the most processed, gross thing i eat. confession! i really need to find an alternative that doesn't involve so many questionable ingredients.

and for sweeteners, i use turbinado sugar.

  15. Truvia is, by far, my favorite non-nutritive sweetener, too. So good! I did a taste test once upon a time of PureVia and Truvia and I really liked Truvia more, mostly because of the texture and being more similar to sugar, like you said.

I think wing sauce is a favorite in our house and I wish there were reins to pull back at 1 teaspoon, but it's probably more like a tablespoon or more, getting up near 600 mg sodium, as you pointed out. Adds up quickly when you like things hot!

I think balsamic vinegar and mustard are 2 favorites of mine, though :)
