Creepy Lobster and The Healthiest Halloween Snack

Happy Halloween everyone!! How about this for a creepy photo?! It looks like the lobster is staring you down, right? It also looks a bit drunk. Too much Blueberry Ale.

Nick and I had surf and turf on Friday night, but I didn't take any photos because it wasn't pretty. I need lessons on cracking open a lobster and extracting the meat. Despite the mess, the lobster was delicious. And even more delicious was our outstanding win against Wisconsin on Friday, GO BUCKS!

Did you know that a study from iVillage showed that 83% of parents buy Trick-Or-Treat candy that they like, so they can eat the leftovers?

Nick and I are part of that 83%, even though we're not parents. I do not buy my candy too early, as in September 1st when it first appears on shelves. If I did that it would be gone long before Halloween (I'll admit, we dipped into this bag on Friday night. Reece's were calling our names. Oh, and then again last night, we had some Snickers from another bag. Yeah, we're still children when it comes to candy).

Did you carve a pumpkin this year?

Nick and I bought one pumpkin and carved it together. Actually he scrapped all the guts out, and I did the carving. It was great team effort. Nick was also in charge of extracting the pumpkin seeds. Did you know that pumpkin seeds are one of the healthiest foods available this time of year (and all year, really)??

They are loaded with protein, monounsaturated fats, iron, zinc, manganese, magnesium, and so much more! Studies have shown they are good for men's bones, diabetes, lowering cholesterol, and arthritis. So, don't throw away those pumpkin seeds.

Baked Pumpkin Seeds

1. Preheat oven to 400
2. Clean and dry your pumpkin seeds
3. Add about 2 tsp. oil per 2 cups (I used garlic olive oil)
4. Add your seasonings (I used salt and pepper)
Bake for ~20 minutes, stirring half way in.
5. ENJOY!

QUESTION: Will you (or did you) be dressing up for Halloween this year? If so, what will you be (or what were you??). Are you handing out candy to kids tonight? We are, and I'm so excited!!

  1. Yum pumpkin seeds... and lobster, both yum. On Saturday night I was an Oreo cookie and today at work I am going to be a pig. We usually get a lot of Trick or Treaters, but this year the town recommended kids not go because of all the ice and power lines/trees down. I hope at least some people don't listen because seeing the Trick or Treaters is my favorite part of Halloween!

  3. that stat doesn't surprise me! When we were too old for trick or treating, even though we only got maybe 2 trick or treaters, my mom ALWAYS bought enough candy to fill a huge bowl! All stuff we loved! This year we didn't buy any candy though! A bonus for my teeth! haha

  4. I've never made lobster because I've no idea how to get the meat out... I should be brave and give it a try some day!!! :)

I'm dressing up for work today. I'm a witch/pirate. Yup. Weird. But I lost my witches hat, and the only hat I could find at the store was a female pirate hat, so that's what I got... ;)

Happy Halloween! Hope you won't have too much leftover candy... ;)

  6. I love roasted pumpkin seeds! Yum! Really, any healthy treat for Halloween gets a thumbs up from me! I'll be munching on pumpkin seeds, Kellogg's FiberPlus(R) bars, and fruit pops this evening. Happy Halloween!

  8. We carved pumpkins this weekend, too! I have mine with ghosts on it...it's cute :) I'll have to take some photos tonight. Mark did all the candy buying, and it's still all in the packaging on the dining room table. I secretly hope there's a few pieces left, though :)

The surf and turf sound delicious...especially the surf ;) Lucky Nick!

  11. Yeah, lobster can be tricky and messy. Even the last time I went with my mom I needed a few pointers since I was used to only eating the tail. We are part if the 83% too, LOL. I wonder who is not? Diabetics perhaps? We actually have way too much left over and I will send some to work with Ryan.

  12. I was going to dress up- as a cupcake and then "walk of shame" with my bf's tshirt over a fancy dress and underwear stuck on the back...carry my heels around all night.

I couldn't walk though- so I didn't- I've recapped it on my post this morning pretty much.

    Next year.

pumpkin seeds are delicious and nutritious- wish people considered them a halloween treat.

    HAPPY LEGAL EATING SEASON!

  13. I only carve pumpkins so I can get the seeds! They're my fave.

I ended up handing out candy and also gave the kids a choice of a mini jack-o-lantern (a clementine with a face drawn on with a sharpie). Most kids took one of each, but 3 kids only took an orange! The littlest kids were so excited---they probably thought they were real pumpkins. It was fun!

next year we will have a real Halloween, kids knocking the door of our house! so fun would be!

  16. Now I'm craving lobster. We didn't carve a pumpkin but I roasted pepitas with cayenne and smoked paprika, they were good. We all dressed up as a family of ghost busters with one marshmallow man. Have you tossed the candy?
