My Last Valentine's Day As a "Single Lady"

I know I'm not technically single, but I'm also not married, so some might still call me single. Yesterday was my last Valentine's Day as a single, non-married women (or at least, I hope it was). I wonder if it was also the last Valentine's Day we will celebrate. I hear all of these stories like, "One you are married, everything changes"....does that mean no more romantic Valentine's Day candlelight dinners with Nick whispering sweet nothings into my ear?!

Last night we went to dinner at the place I work. Yes, I work at a supermarket, but for the past two years they have planned a special dinner for Valentine's Day, and the price and food is unbeatable!

Here is the menu.

We received rose wine for the beginning of our meal, and a cabernet and shiraz blend to have with our entree.

Amuse-Bouche: Cucumber, Crab and Caviar

Appetizer: Pork Tenderloin with Truffled Potato and Sauce Foyot
(This, by the way, was heavenly. The pork was cooked perfectly, and it just melted in my mouth, in a really good way).

Greens: Carpaccio Mezzaluna with Rolled Greens and Yakima Smoke Salt

Intermezzo: Citrus Sorbet
(See the little citrus garnishes? Those were covered in sugar, and so delicious)

In between the first part of our meal we had a nice conversation, and drank our wine. Nick couldn't get enough wine (such a lush). No, I'm kidding, he didn't even drink the red wine, only the rose. What's the deal with Italians who don't drink red wine?! Ok, I guess I'm one of them too, but not because I don't like it. It just hurts my stomach sometimes. The red wine last night was such a perfect pairing with our meal, and luckily, no stomachache!

Nick's Entree: Grilled Beef Tenderloin with Bacon and Blackberry Jam
(This also came with a little potato pancake, which Nick devoured in two seconds. I tried the beef and it was amazing)

My Entree: Grilled Tomato Pesto Shrimp with Ohio City Pasta
(My entree was ok. The shrimp were delicious, but the Ohio city pasta was fried and crunchy....not what I expected. It was tasty, that's for sure, but very difficult to eat with a fork. I was certainly not left hungry though, that's for sure!)

Dessert: Brioche/Banana Brulee Over Zabaione and Pop Rocks
(This dessert wasn't as decadent as last year's bananas foster, but it was delicious none the less. The best part of the dessert had to be the Pop Rocks! I felt like a child again. I loved it)

So another successful Valentine's Day has gone by, and as for us not celebrating Valentine's Day once we are officially married, I'm going to make sure that doesn't happen. I'm not even really into Valentine's Day, but you better believe I'll still be expecting some chocolate or a nice meal. In fact, once we're married I'll be expecting it even more. Nick has no idea what he's getting himself into. Muahaha

QUESTION
: How did you spend your Valentine's Day? If you hate it and spent it doing nothing, I want to hear! Trust me, it's just an excuse to eat chocolate and have good food in my opinion (or watch sappy romantic movies on TV). What's your favorite Valentine's Day dessert? I thought I'd ask because I once thought there was no such thing as a delicious V-day dessert that didn't include chocolate, but I've been proven wrong the past couple years (especially last year).

  1. Looks like a perfect Valentines Day! I think marriage changes some things but for the better! We still celebrate Valentine's Day and it's great because we know each other even more than we did when we were dating so I feel like each year changes with us :)

  2. You must work at the creme da le creme of grocery stores! That is impressive and competitive to any fine dinning establishment!
I love your pics and I like the one of Nick double fistin'! :)
I'm glad you had a great time and I like the pop rocks too!!! Loved it as a kid!
    Vday dessert? Creme brulee...chocolate :)

  3. Awwww, y'all are gorgeous as always!! :-) I'm sooooo happy for you!!
This was our first married V-day and we didn't get to do anything to celebrate, but not because things have "changed," just because Zach was on call at the hospital yesterday and had to work a 14 hour shift! Poor guy. Personally, I don't feel like anything has changed since we've been married, which is awesome. :-) I agree with SimplyLife that the only "changes" are that loving relationships keep getting better over time! :-)

  4. I'm big on celebrating valentine's day (it's actually my favorite holiday because it's a great way to tell everyone you love that you do! I had conversation hearts for the mailman, the dude who pumps my gas, etc) so I was super excited to celebrate. I got up early and made hub his gift (chocolate covered gummy worms - I'm his favorite) and just as I finished I found out my sister was rushed to the hospital and was in critical condition. Then while we were waiting for the ok to see her I ended up cutting off the tip of my finger and had to go to the er, while I was there I said to the doc that my throat was sore from crying she looked at it and I have strep (and now can't go see my sis for at least 24 hours)

We declared a valentine do over -- to happen later this week

  6. So fun! I miss going out to nice restaurants for V day. Since my first son's birth 5 years ago, I've been cooking a nice meal at home. This year I did scallops with a lemon cream sauce, rib-eye, roasted potatoes and kale. Flourless chocolate cake for dessert- my favorite and it was delicious! But I do miss the dining out experience without kids. One of these years we'll get a sitter!

  8. That's a really impressive dinner!

Matt and I have never really been big on celebrating Valentine's day. I mean, I love the day, but I don't like going crazy over it. This year he made me chocolate pudding and we ate it while watching our favourite show: Top Chef.

  9. We had a similar conversation last night-- only for us, it's our last Valentine's Day without kids!! We've had some pretty romantic Valentine's Days as a married couple...but I think the romance might go out the window with a baby :-)

  10. I am jeeealous! That meal looks amazing! It's interesting that the pasta was crunchy on yours. The shrimp look HUGE and delicious :) Any meal with Intermezzos are bound to be good, I feel! I love the pictures of you guys!

I taught last night...and about 1/4th of the class showed. Guess they were all off doing romantic things! When I got home, Mark had gotten me a 6 pack of a local microbrew, a pair of cute socks, Peeps (love'em!), and the sweetest card. He writes the best cards :)

  12. Well I've only been married a year and a half- so far nothing has changed! Actually we had a super uneventful Valentines Day but that was decided by both of us to save money for an amazing vacation next week :) We will celebrate then! Last year though we were married and Eric sent flowers to my work, haha.

Looks like you guys had a delicious dinner!

  14. What an awesome evening and a lovely meal shared.

We had a lovely day. It started with a quiet breakfast, hubby had flowers for me, I made a light lunch, he worked then came home for dinner. I made a light but wonderful dinner and then we watched a movie!

  15. That's so awesome that your work does a V-day dinner. Looks amazing. We didn't do anything too exciting, but we did cook dinner together and enjoy a nice meal at home with wine and strawberries for dessert (I think next year I want fondue!). I didn't get a card this year because we were together all the time and he couldn't sneak away, but he did come home for lunch on V-day (he comes home everyday) and said he could have gone at lunch to buy me a card but he would rather spend time eating lunch with me and that was why I didn't get a card, which was sweet. i know he felt bad he couldn't sneak away but I am glad he came home to spend lunch with me instead of going to the store. We were out of town too recently so that was sort of a V-day treat, and another reason why he didn't have time to get to the store. I think once you are married you will have your own traditions and I am finding more and more I don't need one special day set aside because every day can be like Valentine's day (just less chocolate!).

  16. Hi Gina, I'm a little late to the party! Belated Happy Valentine's day to you and Nick. I assure you, once you're married, it just gets better and Valentine's Days are still celebrated. Just takes work to keep things fresh and fun. I'll have been married 7 years, and we work really hard to maintain the level of fun and romance that we had when we were first together. Or course real life DOES get in the way sometimes, but it is possible. Have a great Thursday.

  17. So nice to have a special dinner :) I'd say once you get married, it's just the same as before except it's now legal! When I came home and opened the door our basset hound came running with a card and a box of mint chocolate timtams on his back. So cute and funny.

  18. So, if that meal came from a grocery store, I've been shopping in the wrong places. As for marriage at Valentines Day, I think it's twofold. One, it becomes a lot about the kids. It's fun for them, they bring treats to school and I get that. Second, the thought of getting a sitter to be out with other people on Valentines Day isn't appealing. I would rather have the romantic meal on another day. So, don't believe the haters that it's all over once you get married you just may make different choices. The chocolate stays the same.
