The 12 Ounce Thurman Burger Indulgence

Last night Nick and I brought my dad (and a few others) to The Thurman Cafe. This place was featured on the Travel Channel about a year ago. Here is a picture of the burger consumed by Adam of the Travel Channel's Man Vs. Food:

Saturday I posted about the dangers of heating high fat proteins, but of course last night I ate (and bought my dad) some high fat protein, which I'm sure was not prepared using the tips I provided in my post.
I did order my burger medium rare, which helps (less cooking time means less time to form those harmful AGEs). But as I always say, everything in moderation! I don't do this often.

This is a picture of the burger I ordered......

12 ounces of fatty ground beef, 2 slices of Swiss cheese, mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, and lots of yellow mustard

Calorie estimate: ~1100

About 20 minutes later......

I almost ate the entire burger, even the wheat-filled bun. I ended up leaving about 1/4 of the bun and a little bit of the cheese on my plate. I didn't touch the chips because they weren't anything special. I was so proud of my burger accomplishment (although I've admittedly done this three times in the past).

Question: When was the last time you let yourself INDULGE and order something that you typically wouldn't? Did you eat the entire thing?

Coming Up

Tomorrow I'll be posting about Agave, High Fructose Corn Syrup, and some new fro yo; Banana and Chocolate Dreams.

Thanks for reading everyone! Have a great day.

  3. Gina

Knowing your "story" from your blog and seeing that having recovered from anorexia you can now indulge yourself gives me great hope for the future.
No food is evil or bad or naughty -it is all about moderation and letting yourself have tasty food you want to enjoy sometimes - it won't suddenly make you gain a ton of weight - bodies are clever. Thank you for posting about this so much, you are such a great example to others!

  4. I love Man Vs. Food!!!

  5. Those are some ginormous burgers! That show is always so interesting. Cool you got to visit one of the featured places! I always indulge at the Cheesecake Factory. I rarely eat Cheesecake, but they have the best!

  6. Hey!! What a delicious looking burger! Glad you enjoyed yourself. I do allow myself to order whatever I really want- all the time- I just somehow mesh healthy with tasty so I never feel guilty because its what I really wanted. Sometimes I eat all of it if I am hungry, sometimes I only eat half.

    :)

  8. I LOVE you Gina! I love how real and practical you are. It's OKAY to indulge, and you really let yourself enjoy your food when you do, which isn't often as you said. You are the model example of moderation.

I had a deep-fried mochi ball today. Eaten with fried potato balls, a fried pancake stuffed with brown sugar and peanuts, and full-fat ice-cream. ;-p

  9. Like Sophia said, this is why I love your blog! A lot of us in the "health foodie" sphere get caught up in strict guidelines of how to eat, but I mean... is it worth it to be 100% "perfect" if you can't share an indulgent night with your family from time to time? There's food; there's health; and then there's LIFE.

I'm not a big burger type of person, but I am a big dessert type. ;) So I like to split a dessert with my parents-- usually something crazy good like tiramisu or baklava!

  10. I confess that if I could find an eating challenge around here that doesn't involve wheat or gluten, I would do it in a heart beat. I LOVE Man Vs. Food and totally have the hunger for it.

  11. My hubby and I watch that show ALL the time and as much as we are entertained by it, we are equally horrified! We've been to a few of the restaurants featured, but have not indulged in the challenges!

I admit that I probably indulge a bit more often than I should - like on vacation when we enjoyed s'mores and ice cream from our favorite places. But how can you turn down ice cream from a shop where their cows that produce the milk are roaming in fields right next door?!

  12. As I said, my dad loves man vs. food and would probably love to eat that burger! I'm all for moderation and enjoying foods, and I think eating a burger like that is definitely ok!

  13. You got some guts girl. Theres no way I'd EVER touch that!! I actually had a piece of cake yesterday...but that didn't go over very well. I wasn't all too happy about it

  14. That looks like a great burger!

I love swiss cheese - one of my favorite burger toppings.

I indulge a little more often then I should - Saturday night I ate an amazing brownie from whole foods. So delicious!

  15. That is a huge burger! Very excellent looking too! I love me a good burger! You are correct-somethings indulgence is necessary! Life's to short to not get a little crazy every so often =)

  16. Good for you for indulging in that burger! I'm all about everything in moderation. I induldge from time to time, but several months ago we went to a Italian restaurant and this ravioli smothered in alfredo sauce with broiled mozzarella cheese was singing to me. I typically do not even go down that path, but I figured if I really want it..go for it. Ate every last bite and it was glorious!

  17. Eeeeek! I ordered sushi this weekend-a baked roll that I probably don't even want to know the calories in! :/ But I haven't indulged like that in a while and enjoyed every last bite. Yep...I finished it! hehe

  18. That is one huge burger! It looks wonderful haha. I let myself indulge in cheese sticks and sometimes burgers when I am drinking!

  19. omg giant burger!! I can't believe that show sometimes. I'm always one for occasional indulgences and I always enjoy a nice juicy burger from time to time :)

  20. That burger is intimidating! I wouldn't want to run into that in a dark alley late at night! The burger you ate looks pretty good though!

I honestly don't remember that last time I completely indulged. Every once in a while we order pizza or get a pasta with high fate white wine sauces and such, but Im always sure to make sure my portions are small. I think I could eat a whole plate covered in high fat indian butter chicken if given the chance!

  21. Holy burger! I definitely want to attempt this challenge with you, but I'm tellin' ya...I don't think I'll own it the way you did! You did awesome! Did Adam finish it on the show?

  22. Looks like a fun meal out! After sweating in our 90 degree apt we decided to go out for some delicious ice cream last night! Definitely a perfect dessert! :)

  25. In reference to your question, I always thought the same thing about salt. I don't add it to certain things because it draws the salt out. However, Cooks Illustrated said for the shrimp that the salt "enters the flesh of the shrimp, helping them to retain valuable juiced during cooking". The shrimp turned out surprisingly tender. Honestly, they were some of the most tender shrimp I've probably ever had cooked in a dish!

  26. I am with you on the splenda, truvia, and etc.... i love them! Haha

I think EVERY food stimulates my appetite :D

  27. I never ever thought I'd see you post something like this haha! I love it though! We went to Red Robin about a month ago and both ordered the gross fatty burgers. When we left we both told each other it wasn't even worth it!

  28. My husband (still getting used to saying that) loves Man vs Food! I had quite a few indulges during our honeymoon. It was hard not to because the food was outstanding!

  29. Holy moly! I am impressed that you were able to eat as much as you did! I probably could have eaten 1/3...if that.

As for indulgences...I am probably overindulging on chocolate at the moment. One of my big weaknesses! If that burger were a piece of chocolate cake, well, then my plate may be nearly empty too after a 20 minute period.

  30. A few days ago my friend and I went to In-n-Out and I 'indulged' in a vanilla milk shake, an animal style burger, and animal style fries! But I totally did not finish the burger and hardly any of the fries. I was perfectly satisfied! Awesome when that happens!

  31. That is an impressive burger!

My favorite indulgence is buying a slice of cheesecake at the Cheesecake Factory! Since my major cravings are fro sweet things, thats where I typically choose to indulge.

  32. WHOA what a burger!

I indulged in a lot of cashews over the weekend. And by a lot I mean 2 tons!

  33. Nice job! You are an eating champion. =) I've probably eaten more than my fair share of ice cream lately. Okay so no probably about it... =)

  34. Wow, that's an intense burger.

I love cheeseburgers, but that one is a bit too messy for me. Bet it tasted good though! :)

  35. I love a good indulgence every now and then. I like what you said about leaving the chips because they were nothing special. If you are going to treat yourself, it might as well be something really good.

  36. That burger is a monster!! I consider burgers an indulgence myself, and enjoyed one just last week :) First burger of the summer season. YUM!
